I picked and styled all 8 actors’ costumes for this new historical musical following the aethetics of Neo-Chinese style, alongside of being the assistant director.
“The Neo-Chinese style reflects the play’s blend of traditional and modern elements. Although the costumes aren’t like those in traditional Three Kingdoms stories, the actors‘ demeanor and the costumes still capture the essense of their characters, which is very impressive.”- Audience feedback
“The costumes are mainly in black, white and greyish brown, which is especially eye-catching when the set and props are minimal and it helps distinguishing the characters.” - Audience feedback
168BC, Imperial China, the final years of the Han Dynasty. Struggling through a time of famine and unrest, frustrated by her own inaction, Liu Bei, a sandal maker, joins the army with her sworn brothers, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. Cao Cao, a fugitive wanted for the attempted assassination of the tyrannical Lord Regent, schemes his way into the rebelling Coalition in a bid for power. Lu Bu, a psychopathic warrior under the Lord Regent’s employ, struggles with a lifetime of violence and envy as he falls in love with a woman who hates him. With compassion, wit, or cruelty, they each attempt to shape a kingdom that embodies their ideals as their paths converge. Based on iconic characters from Chinese literature, this original stage musical features new compositions combining traditional East Asian motifs with retro-modern polish.
